New Partnership with CVAC and Douglas County

On Wednesday, July 2, 2025, Douglas County officially completed the purchase of the Carson Valley Cinemas for $2.9 million.

On June 25, 2025 Douglas County commissioners approved a contract with the nonprofit Carson Valley Arts Council to operate the theatres for the next five years, with an additional three-year option.

The cinemas were purchased using funds generated during the pandemic from transient occupancy taxes that are restricted to use for recreation and tourism.

The cinemas exceed 20,000 square feet, but until the public process begins it is not known how much of that will be devoted to the performance venue.

On January 8, 2026, the Douglas County Commissioners approved a contract for an architect to design the new cinema complex.

Over the next few months the architect will be reaching out to the public through town halls and stakeholders meetings to determine what residents would like to see in a new cultural and performing arts center.

Brian Fitzgerald, President of the Carson Valley Arts Council said “We’re talking about ultimately a design with a large stage and a fixed seat venue designed for music, dance and theater.” “Each one of those disciplines requires different amenities backstage, including dressing rooms, green rooms, lighting and sound.  We anticipate that all those needs will ultimately be included in the final design.”

“We also anticipate that there will be other forms of art that will be supported at this facility, whether it be gallery space, classroom space for the visual arts, and potentially offices for us and some of our partners,” he said. “This certainly will meet the need for our local organizations that are looking for a place and we could work with the Douglas County School District to provide a venue for their music and performing programs, as well.”
